"Cotes du Rhone" is the virile wine style from the sunny south you should avoid to drink before sitting on the 2000 years old stones of the Antique Theatre of Vienne burned by a hard sun all day long.  In spite of, the summer rock festival is named "Cotes du Rock"and the Who is the main figure this year opening the festival which ends with David Gilmour on the 31th of July.

Simon Townshend and Casbah club open the show after a french local band of which I prefer keep silence. Simon plays loud and sings clear but could ask his Big Brother to write them a couple of good songs. He don't have so much to play and keep the better ones for the end of his gig as public starts to appreciate. Bruce Foxton plays a great bass riff from an old Jam standard and jump the higher he can to emphasize the note. He will not be overshooted by anybody on the night !! Maybe he could have been The rock bass player the Who need if he could stay quiet, sticked to his amp.

The night has come and the Who driven by Pete walking a funny duck walk with his guitar rolling comes in. People gets immediately enthusiastic. I can't explain explodes and the audience as well. Emma my daughter, 18 years of Live at Leeds addiction, is up, shooting to the band just 15 meters lower. The theatre is a marvelous sounding place and everybody feels very close to the boys. Exactly the inverse of big stadiums. Pete, not in a big jive tonight tell us how amazing he feels the place.

The band is in a great mood very powerful. No pop but absolute rock to get a massive reply, which he gets of course. Pete has a fantastic energy, playing loud, hitting guitars to get more sound, jumping and smiling to the stars. Roger maybe a little down in the beginning sings in the same way, just going not so high as necessary on Behind blue eyes. He plays a nice intro on acoustic guitar on Naked eye and comes real great  on the Relay. This one is for me and Chris the french mod, my old Who fellow, the very top of the show with WGFA which finishes it. Pete is completely ecstatic trying to get more power, windmilling with perfect precision, letting go short solos nobody knows where it comes from ... Extra terrestrial playing.

Isabelle, realizes how far this band rocks you. She will nevermore tell us "Oh no, not the Who again" when we try to play an acoustic review of Quad in her living room. Sylvie, who thought she never could meet the band, very rare in France since the 70's, wants the show to never finish. Fabien, 18 years old, who knows all lyrics improve his english while I fell on my knees and pray : thanks Pete, you are the greatest and I do still believe in Rock.

The encore starts with a mighty Substitute and finish with a Tommy four tunes (fortune ;) ...  See me, feel me ... all the audience is up singing with Roger.

A very good show for a summer audience in the south. Sometimes a little easy going on with no surprise but a complete engagement of Pete and Roger. I  would like to tell the same for others but in my opinion, Pino very good bass player don't break the mirror ... Zak, Rabbit and Simon are excellent but without the bit of madness which sometimes one misses. Pete has stolen all of it when it falls from the skyes ...
